Whose Mine is it Anyway? National Interest, Indigenous Stakeholders and Colonial Discourses: The Case of the Jabiluka Uranium Mine

چکیده
In this paper I examine the case of the highly controversial Jabiluka uranium mine which was recently given the green signal by the John Howard government. The mine, to be constructed in the heart of the Kakadu National Park (home to the Mirrar people and a World Heritage site) has been the topic of public debate and controversy involving Aboriginal communities, political parties, the mining industry, and environmentalists. By examining the colonial and anti-colonial discourses that inform the mining project with a particular focus on the colonialist, capitalist discourse inherent in the construction of Australian nationhood and the management of Aboriginal identity, I argue that contemporary postcolonial theory can be problematic in accounting for anticolonialist struggles or the struggles of the colonized to negotiate with and survive colonial conditions. I also examine the differential power dynamics among the different stakeholders in this process. I conclude by discussing implications of this case for stakeholder theory and for critical management studies.

Bioleaching of Low Grade Uranium Ore of Saghand Mine
This study deals with bioleaching of the low grade uranium ore of Saghand mine in Iran using a mixed culture of mesophilic bacteria (Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans). Experiments were carried out in shaking flask examining the effect of temperature, initial ferrous ion concentration, pulp density and particle size. Variations of ...
متن کاملMaintainability measure based on operating environment, a case study: Sungun copper mine
The life cycle cost of a system is influenced by its maintainability. Maintainability is a design parameter, whose operational conditions can affect it significantly. Hence, the effects of these operational conditions should be quantified early in the design phase. The proportional repair model (PRM), which is developed based on the proportional hazard model (PHM), can be used to analyze mainta...
متن کاملApplication of VENTSIM 3D and mathematical programming to optimize underground mine ventilation network: A case study
Ventilation is a vital component of an underground mining operation, used to guarantee a safe atmosphere for workers and survive them from the hazardous and toxic gases. In the recent years, engineers have begun to apply new operation research techniques in order to optimize the ventilation systems to assist in achieving a regulatory compliance, reduce ventilation costs, and improve its efficie...
متن کاملIsolation and identification of native sulfuroxidizing bacterium capable of uranium extraction
Bioleaching is the extraction of metals from their ores through the use of microorganisms. Inthis process, the use of native bacteria leads to achieve more yields of metals. So, in the presentstudy, native sulfur-oxidizing bacterium in potentiality of uranium extraction was isolated fromGhachin mine in Iran and identified by partial gene sequencing. For this purpose, the watersamples were colle...

Flesh and osteoderms of estuarine crocodiles (C. porosus) from Kakadu National Park, Northern Australia, were analysed for a range of metals, including uranium, to assess their capability for accumulation, in relation to their catchment-specific exposure to i) uranium mine effluents and mineralisation and ii) lead shot ammunition through their consumption of fauna shot by the traditional owners...
